Is green tea decaffeinated or caffeine free?  A friend asked me that question recently and I was a little surprised.  But, it seems that many people think that the process that makes the leaves black increases the caffeine-content.  The truth is that the green varieties may have as much of the stimulant as the black ones do, possibly more.

30-50mg is what you’ll find in an eight ounce cup of the green varieties, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest.  An average of 47mg is what you’ll find in an eight ounce cup of a black variety.  Either is a better choice than coffee, which contains between 64 and 330 mg per serving, depending on the variety and the size of the cup.  330mg is found in a 16 ounce cup of Starbuck’s Coffee Grande.

If a person goes over 500mg per day from all combined sources including, sodas, over-the-counter medications and chocolate, he or she is likely to experience a number of unwanted side effects.  In fact, some doctors believe that anti-anxiety drugs and sleep aids are over-prescribed, when the logical treatment would be to reduce caffeine intake.

But, here’s another question.  Is green tea decaffeinated before it is included in health supplements?  That depends on the supplement.

Some supplement manufacturers actually add additional amounts, particularly those that are advertised as fat-burners and promoted as weight loss aids.  One of the popular fat-burners that are sold in practically every department store contains particularly excessive amounts.  If taken as directed, a person would get over 500mg, just from the supplement. Most people drink caffeinated beverages throughout the day.  So, an extra 500mg is simply too much.

Then, there’s another question.  If it does have a lower caffeine-content, is green tea decaffeinated safely?  There are a variety of different decaffeination methods used by beverage companies, but the most common requires the use of a solvent.  The most commonly used solvent is a possible carcinogen.

Some of the better health supplements contain an extract that is high in antioxidant content, but very low in caffeine-content.  Taking the supplement would add only 2mg per day of the stimulant to your current intake.  More and more studies are showing that small to moderate amounts of caffeine are good for your health.  It may reduce your risk of heart disease and Alzheimer’s.  It is only when intake is excessive that it becomes a problem.

Now, you know that “no” is the answer to; is green tea decaffeinated, at least the naturally occurring leaves are not caffeine-free.  The caffeine-content varies, as does the antioxidant content. 

If you are thinking of taking a supplement, your best value comes from one that contains a number of different antioxidant ingredients.  Resveratrol, coenzyme Q10, l-glutathione and L-carnosine are just some of the ones to look for.  Antioxidants are our best defense against free radical damage, oxidative stress and cellular aging.

What’s the green tea antioxidant?  There are actually a number of different green tea antioxidants, with names that are difficult to pronounce.  In most of the studies conducted by research groups concerning the health benefits of the beverage, the scientists used standardized and concentrated extracts that contained some or all of them.  Here’s a brief look at what’s been going on over the last few years.

Cancer prevention, heart disease prevention, stress prevention, cholesterol reduction, arthritis prevention and obesity prevention are just some of the areas that have been studied.  How could one little plant do so much?  The truth is that most plants contain compounds that are beneficial to human health.  As a group, they are called polyphenol.

In a study sponsored by the American Association for Cancer research, a green tea antioxidant polyphenol preparation called “POLYPHENON E” was shown to limit the growth of colorectal tumors in rats treated with a substance that causes that type of cancer.  The researchers concluded that rats eating the preparation were less than half as likely to develop colon cancer.

Another study published in 2006 followed over 40,000 Japanese adults between the ages of 40 and 79 for a period of 11 years.  They concluded that participants that consumed more than 5 cups of green tea per day had a 26 percent lower risk of heart disease than those the drank less than a cup per day.  Studies like those don’t indicate which green tea antioxidants are the most beneficial, but the combination of all of them.

The green tea antioxidants include the catechins EGCG, EGC, ECG and EC.  Polyphenols such as L-theanine, caffeine and the caffeine-like substances theophylline and theobromine are also found in the plants.  Researchers try to identify which compound provides the benefit for several reasons.  One is so that prescription drugs can be made from it.  There is already one prescription ointment based on the green tea antioxidant activity.  It is used to treat certain types of warts.

Most of us that take health supplements containing green tea antioxidants do so because of the decreased heart disease or cancer risk.  There is sufficient evidence to suggest that the teas help prevent breast and prostate cancer to allow manufacturers to list that claim on their packaging, according to the US FDA.

But, the green tea antioxidant is not the only one that has been studied repeatedly.  My personal goal is to strive to get as many healthy anti-oxidants and other nutrients as I possible can, every day, without exceeding my ideal caloric intake.  The only way that I can do that is with a multi-nutritional supplement.  The best ones contain all-natural extracts.  They aren’t the cheapest, but they are the most effective.

As time goes by, we may learn more about which green tea antioxidants are most important or scientists may stop doing the research.  Whenever a new discovery comes along, everyone wants to be a part of the process, but as interest wanes, so does the research.  It is safe to say that a green tea antioxidant is unique and beneficial to human health.  That’s enough for me. To Your Heart

The benefits and side effects of green tea were originally studied because of a reduced incidence of heart disease among regular green tea drinkers.  Animal studies have shown that the catechins in the leaves improve the contractibility of the heart muscle and inhibit clotting and clogging of the arteries.

However, the research is not conclusive enough for health supplement manufacturers to make claims concerning positive green tea side effects in relation to the heart.  There are some basic vitamins, minerals and amino acids that are known to be beneficial to the heart, including vitamin D3, magnesium and l-arginine. 

To Prevent Cancer

Eventually, the benefits and side effects of green tea were studied because of observational studies.  Researchers noted that there was a lower than average incidence of stomach and throat cancer among regular drinkers.  Over the years, multiple studies have been conducted concerning a decreased cancer risk and supplement manufacturers are now allowed to state that the extract may help to prevent prostate and breast cancer.

For Fat Loss

Increased fat oxidation has been seen in numerous studies.  But, before you run out and buy a fat burner, remember the unwanted side effects of green tea caffeine.  Most of the fat burners on the market contain excessive amounts of caffeine, more than enough to cause the unwanted symptoms mentioned at the beginning of this article.

An 8 ounce cup of drip brewed coffee contains 95mg.  A 16 ounce Starbucks Cafe Latte contains 150mg and a “Grade” contains 330mg.  Sodas have differing amounts depending on the brand.  The soda with the highest caffeine content is Mountain Dew, coming in at 54mg per 12 ounces.  When your caffeine-intake gets up to 500mg per day, you are likely to start having problems, such as poor sleep, headaches and nervousness.  

Does green tea contain caffeine when you make it at home?

Brewing at home is one of the big variables.  The longer that the leaves are allowed to seep, the higher the caffeine-content becomes.  The amount also depends on the country where the leaves were grown.  Those grown in India, for example, tend to have more than others.  If you are worried about the answer to does green tea have caffeine, use a shorter brewing time.
