Global warming is a major threat for the earth and its inhabitants, so it is important that we all contribute towards making earth a better and safer place to live in. One way that we can help to save the earth from pollution and global warming is by constructing green roofing. Green roofs are known as vegetated layers that sit on top of the conventional roof surfaces of a building. Green roofing is an excellent option for city people to have greenery around their home, who lack green space such as yard or deck. Apart from offering pollution free environment it also provides opportunity for expressing one’s creativity and brings nature back to the city. Green roofing are also known for providing aesthetically pleasing effect and offer a visual contrast to the pavement and steel that mostly dominates the city.

Green roofing have many environmental benefits such as, it reduces water runoff that occur with typical homes. It is also good for the community as too much runoff can result in flooding and water contamination. Green roofing are made of soil and plant life and are able to absorb as much as 75% of falling rain water. Through condensation this moisture is release back into the air.  Green roofing is also able to reduce the presence of toxins in the environment. The plants of the roof absorb the pollutants present in air and water and also the carbon-di-oxide to make the environment safe and clean. The plant produces oxygen that also makes the air free from contamination and impurities.

Green roofing is also an excellent investment as a properly installed green roof last at least twice as long as typical roofing material, thereby saving one’s repair and replacement costs. It also significantly reduces heating and cooling bills. Temperatures in cities are much higher than in surrounding areas because of prevalence of buildings in a small area. Built with traditional material these building absorb and redirect the sun’s heat making the cities much warmer than rural areas where there are less building and more green space. Many cities are offering incentives to builders for having green roofing to their buildings.

Basically there are two types of green roofs such as intensive green roofs and extensive green roofs. Intensive roof garden feature large plants or lawns and require a great deal of maintenance such as feeding, watering and soil care. Extensive roof garden has only a thin layer of soil and requires very little work to maintain. These kinds of green roofing are good for the environment and also pleasing to the eye. It not only providing positive impact on the environment but it is also increasing the value of one’s home.

With all the problems we hear about the environment and the fears for global catastrophe because of its deterioration, the people’s consciousness about being eco friendly is increasingly being highlighted. From trying to recycle to using more biodegradable products to building eco friendly homes, what we call the green home, everyone is trying to do his or her part in saving the planet. It is no surprise then that many campaigns among several segments are increasingly becoming popular – what is called the green movement is now not only limited to protecting the forests and vegetation but also to every other aspect that can contribute to keeping the ecological balance and making this world a healthier place to live in.

Apparently, building a green home has some certification requirements as stated by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). There are several products that are now being marketed that consumers buy as “green products.” A product must be eco-labeled before it can be considered a certified green product. You can check online if the product you are buying is certified and that you are not being “greenwashed.”

From materials for home building to the smallest home accessories, you can find environmentally friendly options to make your home a green home. For example, you can opt to buy organic sheets for the bedroom. Such sheets are made of organic cotton, meaning the cotton used for the production of the fabric was not treated with pesticides or environmentally harmful dyes and other chemicals. There are also other sheets and curtains that are made up of 100 percent recyclable materials and some are made from plant-derived components. All of which are nontoxic and noncarcinogenic. There is also what is called the phosphate-free laundry wash, which is made from organic plants and is also biodegradable. Building a green living space also means conserving water and energy resources. You can start with a energy-saving lighting system and energy-saving appliances. The cooling, water-heating, and the lighting systems of a home must all be energy-efficient. A water-conserving irrigation system may also be installed; for example, a house could have a system to collect and store rainwater. The house must also be open to natural daylight, which means reduced energy consumption and a structure that would allow better home ventilation. As for building the house itself, naturally renewable resources and raw materials such as bamboo must be utilized. There are also other materials made up of recycled constituents, like kitchen tiles, that are available and these should be prioritized. Outside the home, landscaping can play a big part in making your home environmentally friendly. If the space allows it, plant drought-tolerant plants that do not require being constantly watered, cover your screen windows with vines, and, if possible, have large canopy trees around the house.

Thus, from raw materials in home building to the smallest accessories and appliances inside the house, we can make our contribution in trying to save the environment. It does not take much, and the smallest act of concern will contribute a lot in the grand scheme of things.

They are intended to change our behaviour and the way that we live, to make us less wasteful and conserve scarce resources for generations to come. We are consuming the planets resources at an unsustainable rate and this article will look at 3 of the proposed taxes to see if it will change anything.

Green Tax No 1. To try and persuade us to drive less, the government has increased petrol prices by 1.5 pence per litre. Not much you might say, but it makes our petrol even more expensive and we already pay one of the highest rates in Europe. It will now cost you up to 50 pence more when you go to the petrol station to fill your tank up, will this make you drive less? I think not, therefore is this a green tax or just a plain and simple money making tax. Every extra penny per litre adds millions of pounds to the governments income per year.

Green Tax No 2. Air passenger duty is due to rise from £5 to £10. Even on short haul flights this is not going to make much difference. Are you not going to go on holiday or visit friends by air because it costs you an extra fiver more… again I think not! This extra £5 will raise millions of pounds for the government in revenue.

Green Tax No 3. Ken Livingston the London Mayor wants to charge 4×4 gas guzzling residents of London much higher parking and congestion charge fees. They may be angered by the tax, but they may just pay-up. Especially as London now has more million and billionaires then almost anywhere else on the plant. I agree that this is a step in the right direction proving the amounts are high enough to make people think twice about buying one. I have friends that have 4×4 as they want more room for their partner and one child. Get real!

With all these green taxes being introduced I find it difficult to believe that the government allows for the rail fares to be increased above inflation pushing more people into using cars. I have been on those expensive, crammed, rush hour trains and its not nice I can tell.

When the tax payer has some real options to help reduce carbon emissions, then a taxation regime to deal with unnecessary pollution appears more justified, at the moment it seems like raising money is the main objective and not cutting the effects of climate change.

Experts say biomass or ‘bioenergy’ is in fact one of the main green energy sources being considered for mass implementation.

The question is…what in the world is bioenergy?

It’s kind of like something out of a sci-fi movie, it is a process by which lots of yummy organic material such as animal waste, plants and wood are used to generate electricity, produce heat and also aid in the production of bio fuels.

With biomass, hot air or water is generated to produce electricity. This is done through direct combustion and yet this is considered the simplest way of generating energy from biomass, it is also considered the most common method of generating energy from biomass.

Not only can biomass be used to generate electricity, biomass can be used for hot air production. This means it could be used as a new renewable and slightly greener method of heating your home or office. To do so, the biomass must be combusted in a furnace where it heats the air being fed into your home/office. Biomass could also be used as a more efficient water heater, simply by using the same method of heating the air. The best part is…we already know that biomass can be used in a small scale heating system. (so keep your eyes out for them)

Some people have been combining the heat producing features and the electric producing features of biomass to generate the both of them, which is commonly called ‘CHP’ (or Combined Heat and Power). This is something that most people consider to be one of the best features of biomass, is it’s ability to be efficient enough to serve multiple purposes.

It is a fact that if you compare the electricity produced by biomass and solar sources, biomass will always produce more. Why? Because solar panels take in energy from the sun and send it somewhere to be stored or used. But the plants and organic materials used to create biomass have been taking in and storing energy from the sun within them. Meaning that biomass is just a big mass of sun energy…almost in a concentrated form.

You don’t have to collect it first which is what happens with solar or even wind energy since this is manufactured technology. It is readily available unlike the other two which is totally dependent on the weather.

With using biomass extensively, the dependence on foreign oil and the cost to dispose of waste will no longer be a problem. Think of the ‘REAL’ freedoms this could create for many countries. Including North America!

There is one real downside to bioenergy…you have to burn waste and other organic materials to produce power. This adds to the pollution which is already in the atmosphere and that causes concerns among many scientists and eco watch dogs everywhere. Luckily for bioenergy…the future is bright, clean, green, renewable, and realistic. Thanks to someone stating the obvious…plants work to scrub the carbon dioxide from our air, thus reducing the pollution in our atmosphere. If we use biomass/bioenergy we can plant more crops and other green organic life, which will do just that…and a good idea has risen, prep and use the land that once produced oil and grow the green material need to produce biomass/bioenergy!

Biomass uses renewable natural resources which is why it is considered green energy and we have an endless supply of it everywhere we look. Just like the power we consume from the sun or the wind, they are all renewed naturally and independently.

We have the green technology to generate power without causing harm to our environment…we just need to muster the willingness to take the next step and make it happen.

How Going Green Can Save the Environment and Your Bank Account

Many people are going green to reduce their carbon footprint to help to save the environment.  But going green can also have a positive effect on your bank account as well.  If you are looking to save some green, going eco friendly can help you to do so in multiple ways.

Save energy

Looking for ways to save energy can help you to save money as well when it comes time to pay your electric bill.  And you don’t have to switch to alternative energy source for that electricity, although that is a good idea in itself.  Setting your home thermostat down a few degrees in the winter and up a few degrees in the summer will waste less energy.  Changing to compact fluorescent light bulbs will save energy and put fewer light bulbs in landfills.  Washing your clothes with cold water and then drying them on a clothesline will help you to save a lot of money and energy when you do the laundry.

Save water

Another way to go eco friendly and save cash is to save water.  Try taking shorter showers or installing a low-flow showerhead. Wait to run dishwashers and washing machines until you have a accumulated a full load.  And when planting outside, look for plants that need a minimal amount of watering.  When it comes to the water you drink, skip on buying the bottled stuff and instead get a filter for your home tap reducing plastic bottle consumption.  Carry a reusable water bottle filled with your filtered water with you to help reduce waste and cut your costs.

Save fuel

If rising gas prices are a concern for you, then saving gas will help you save money along with saving the environment.  You could try walking or riding a bike instead of driving where you need to go.  Telecommuting, using public transportation, or moving closer to work will help save you money in the face of rising fuel prices and reduce your carbon footprint.

One of the best solutions to consider is to buy a converter kit for your vehicle, thus making your existing car a hybrid. By performing the simple task of installing the kit, you will make use of cleaner fuel and reduce your personal emissions as well as get an overall lower gas price. This, coupled with tremendous financial savings due to reduced gas costs, makes installing a kit an easy win–win decision for any consumer.

Save food

While you might not think of the purchase of groceries as being eco friendly behavior, there are some things you can do while shopping that will help the environment and save you money.  Try eating one additional meatless meal a week, or go completely vegetarian.  This will help you cut your grocery budget and reduce negative environmental factors.  Buy locally produced food as much as you can – not only will the food be fresher and healthier and likely cost less, but you will not have to worry about the carbon footprint created for shipping the items nearer to you.

Buy smart

Buying smarter will help to save you money and allow you to be more eco friendly at the same time.  Recycling is great, but “Reuse before Recycling” as this saves even more resources. Try finding gently used secondhand products instead of buying new, particularly for items like furniture, appliances, clothes, and even toys.  Buy products from companies that use alternative fuels in manufacturing and/or are conscious about their carbon footprint.  Borrow books and videos from the library, and share toys and tools with neighbors.  You can also buy in bulk to save money reducing the amount of packaging that come with your products and reduce your usage profile.

If you pay attention to your everyday life, there are plenty of areas where you can shop smarter and save green in both your pocketbook and the environment.

BluWave Hybrid manufacturers and distributes hydrogen fuel injection (HFI) alternative fuel systems providing substantial emissions reduction and fuel savings for most vehicles around the world.

Green Technology Protects Environment and Consumer’s Wallet

Green cars are the current trend in the auto industry. The upward surge of gas prices and the increasing awareness of the global warming threat among consumers have prompted them to look for environmentally friendly and wallet friendly vehicles.

For decades, American motorists have favored larger cars like sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks. Currently though, the demand for smaller and fuel efficient cars is increasing steadily. Going for green cars like the Toyota Prius not only protects the environment but also the consumer’s wallet. These green cars are known for their fuel efficiency thus reducing the amount of money spent on gasoline.

Aside from that, hybrid vehicles come with a tax incentive from IRS. Consumers are advised to consult their dealers about tax incentives they may avail of when purchasing a hybrid vehicle. Recently, a new money-saving issue has cropped up.

Insurance companies are now offering incentives for hybrid car owners. In fact, some insurance companies will automatically replace a hybrid car’s battery pack if the vehicle has been involved in an accident that damaged the stock battery pack. Currently, battery packs for hybrid vehicles are priced at about $3,000. Some insurance companies also offer premium discounts for hybrid car owners of up to five percent.

Hybrid vehicles are already numerous in the United States with domestic and international brands offering different hybrid cars. Ford is already leading the field for domestic car manufacturers in developing and producing hybrid vehicles. Asian brands like Nissan also offers hybrid version of their popular vehicles like the Altima sedan for the mentioned company. The Altima hybrid is essentially the common Altima except that it employs hybrid technology to complement its high performance parts such as Nissan strut bellow.

Toyota and Honda lead the pack with their host of hybrid vehicles. The Toyota Prius still remains as the most sought after gas hybrid vehicle in the United States and this is evident in increasing year over year sales of the model. Honda also offers a hybrid version of the Accord and the Civic.

Aside from going green on vehicles, Americans are also exploring new ways to save on their energy consumption. In California, almost 4,700 residents are using solar energy on their homes. In connection with that, insurance companies are also providing incentives for homeowners using solar energy on their homes. Candysse Miller, the executive director of the Insurance Information Network of California, has this to say: “Environmental awareness and action is more than just good for the planet – it can be good for your wallet. Not only can you save with reduced energy bills, but some insurers are offering insurance packages to address this growing market segment.”

NISKAYUNA, NEW YORK – We hear a lot of talk about the “smart grid,” and it sounds high-tech and cool, not to mention just around the corner. A look at how General Electric is preparing for this brave new future was both exhilarating and sobering.

Exhilarating, because it promises to give consumers considerable control over their energy efficient destiny. We’ll be able to order our energy-conscious appliances to run only when the time-dependent rates are low, and switch to half-power when peak use sends those rates soaring. We’ll see our real-time power use displayed on “smart meters” and home energy managers. We’ll plug in our cars, and let the grid decide on an optimal charging time.

Sobering because it isn’t here yet, and won’t be tomorrow either. There are 140 million electric meters in use in the U.S., and just making them “smart” will take at least 10 years, GE officials said. Replacing all the transmission lines that make our grid “dumb” — i.e., unable to move wind power generated in North Dakota to, say, New York, where there’s a big population waiting to use it — will take much longer and cost much more. Estimates of total cost range from $100 billion to $2 trillion.

The Obama administration’s $11 billion in smart grid stimulus funding certainly helps, but even the most optimistic estimate sees a relatively long timetable and huge investment for the full vision to be realized.

GE smart grid

While at GE, I watched a technician simulate what it would be like for the grid to take control of my power use, and visited the “kitchen of the future,” a row of cutaway appliances (with neon tubes substituting for stove burners) at General Electric’s Global Research HQ in Niskayuna, New York. A computer monitor would allow me to cut my dryer’s electric use from 4.5 to 2.5 kilowatts when rates spike (and increasing drying time in the process, of course).

GE unveiled what it called the “Net Zero Energy Home” concept, but it didn’t say whether it would actually build one for us to play with.

An Ipsos poll commissioned by the company shows that three out of five people would “change their electricity consumption behavior” after the smart grid was introduced, because they could see how, for example, leaving a light on affects their bill. Some 73% of respondents (in the U.S. and the UK) wanted to learn more, and half of Americans (a third in the UK) were willing to pay more per month for smart grid benefits).

Electric vehicles (EVs) are also part of the smart grid, of course. In fact, its appearance appears to be neatly timed to coincide with the first plug-in hybrid cars — which will mostly be charged during off-peak hours. According to GE’s Natarajan Venkatakrishnan, charging an EV uses as much power as your whole house is likely to consume in a day. If every plug-in hybrid owner came home and plugged in at 6 p.m., grid disaster could soon ensue.

EV startup companies, from Aptera to Bright Automotive, are equipping their cars with software to interact with the smart grid when it’s available. My guess is the cars will be on the road before the grid is ready.

Now I am not talking about a vegitarian diet…I’m talking about an ORGANIC diet!

I know for a fact that in the last 3 years, organic foods have really hit the market hard. Almost everyone of us could look through our kitchens and find organic dairy, produce, or meat products (along with everything in between).udaorganic

With organic foods and products flooding the market, the idea of leading a healthy life is no longer just an idea…it’s a reality…for anyone! I know for a fact that my overall level of feeling healthy, has increased dramatically since I started replacing what I eat with organic substitutes.

I never would have thought that what I had been eating and buying from the store for years, was actually playing a part in my over all health…even though I was doing everything I could to lead an above average healthy life. Due to the addition of healthy organic foods into my life…I feel I am finally reaching my standard of a healthy life.

Non organic foods contain so many things that in my opinion are harmful to our bodies. Things like non-organic chemical based fertilizers, pesticides, and herbacides put into the mix of the growth process with all of our normal produce from the grocery store. Then you have the wonderful advancement in our food production… GMO ’s (genetically modified organisms) which involve the process of modifying the genetic structure of what we eat!

I’m sorry I just want food…I don’t feel that it is right to have all of these harmful chemicals introduced to us via what we eat. We eat to live and be healthy…not to line the pockets of mass food producers….bottom line.

I know eating organic and living a healthier ‘green’ life seems like it is somewhat out of reach due to the cost factor…but it is a must to really think about you and your family’s overall health. I’ve had to cut back on some of my family’s luxuries like going out to eat all of the time…but I know for a fact that I am dodging the bullet when it comes to the exposure to harsh chemicals and genetically modified foods. And not only that…I know for a fact that when we sit down for dinner every night…my family is gaining the right nutrients they need to live a healthy ‘Green’ life.

Think about the following the next time you go shopping for you and/or your family:

- Your buying food that has been introduced to chemicals

- The safety of your children…because it is a fact that children ARE more vulnerable to everything (this also includes the safety of people over 65)

- The organic produce, meat, and dairy products that are available to you, more than likely traveled  half the distance to your grocery store than your non organic foods (meaning they are fresher). Not only that, they are normally produced by MUCH smaller farms.

- In reality organics really are not more expensive. I know the price tags are higher(which with conventional produce this can be a sign of underpaid workers) but there are many hidden costs in conventional foods including: billions of dollars in federal agriculture and energy subsides favoring big business, chemical regulation and testing, hazardous waste disposal, and environmental damage (and the cleanup involved). These are not necessary and are harmful to us and our planet.

- Organic foods TASTE BETTER and have higher level of vitamins, minerals, and beneficial nutrients.

- Finally the organic foods you see, as you browse though the grocery store, are required (in order to be certified USDA Organic) to be free of: GMOs, rBGH or rBST (growth hormones in dairy products), antibiotics, and the arsenal of chemicals that are introduced to conventional non-organic foods.

I hope this post hits home a little bit and brings you and your family closer to a ‘greener’…healthier lifestyle.

Thank you for reading and don’t stop expressing your green!

Dubai syscraper to integrate a solar thermal tower

Putting solar panels on the roof (or side) of your skyscraper is so 2008. If you really want some efficiency without all those complicated photovoltaics. If you really love renewable energy, and you also like EXTREME temperatures, you should just buckle down and put a solar power tower at the top of your skyscraper.

And that’s the idea of the Almeisan Tower that’s been designed for Za’abeel park in Dubai.

The tower would be a home to an observation deck, a cafe, a children’s library and community meeting space, and would produce enough electricity to power itself, and several neighboring buildings. The solar power portion, at the top, would simply be a bunch of rotating mirrors that focus the sun’s light on a point at the peak of the structure. That point would get so hot that water pumped through would vaporize, and turn a steam turbine to create electricity. It’s not a new idea, eSolar is building several of these plants in America now, and they’ve been producing power in Spain for years.

almesiantower2

But I’ve never seen anyone planning on sticking one on top of a building.

Solar thermal power is generally more well suited to centralized power generation, where lots of energy can be produced off-site on cheap land in sunny areas. But I’m not going to fault the building’s designer, Robert Ferry, for thinking outside the box. I hope this thing gets built, if only because it’s kinda awesome.
